LOSS OF THE STEAM LAUNCH OLGA.
—. July 5. On July 2nd Captain Tinney, of the s.s. Aorere, reported to the Collector of Customs that the body of a man was found ou Friday last on the beach one and a halt* miles north of the mouth of the Wangaehu River. On a watch which was found ou the body were engraved the initials "F.D." The steam launch Olga, which left "Wei-. lington on Saturday week, had on board two men named Larsen and Fritz Dumoli. The body found is evidently that of Dumoli, whose initials correspond with those on tho watch. There is noAv little doubt that ths Olga met her fate in the southerly galo which was raging last week. lb was at first intended that the s.s. Waverley should tow the Olga to Patea, but; the arrangements, owing to bad weather, fell through, and Larsen resolved to steam up. He sought the assistance of Dumoli, who at the time was engaged doing odd jobs about the Star Hotel" and he agreed to accompany him on, as it now turns out, the fatal voyage. Dumoli, who was a Dane, was about 55 years of age. He came to the Colony about 12 months ago, and is described as being a. steady, sober and industrious man. Ho has no relatives in the Colony. Larsen, who has a son living at Patea, has no doubt shared the same fate as his companion. The Customs office and Marine Department were not aware that the Olga was going to leave port, she having no permit to do so. The Chief Inspector of Machinery, Mi TV. M. Mouatt, says that in her condition had a permit been applied for it would not have been granted. We understand that the Olga was about 24ft long, and was not decked.
