During the passage of the Wainui from the West Coast the chief officer, while getting out some sails in the forepeak, came across a quantity of clothing, which was identified as having come from a portmanteau which Mr W M. Espie, who travels for a Dunedin brewery firm, had lost on Friday last, and from a sampla case which had been lost by Mr Alexander, traveller for Messrs Ross and Glendining. Suspicion fell Upon a seaman named Patrick McDerniott, who was kept in custody until the arrival of the boat at Wellington on Sunday night, when he was handed over to Chief Detective Campbell. There is a proposal jto construct an enormous free open-air bath in Liverpool.
