There is a possibility of a coal reef beingopened tip near Dalefield. A Grey town resident, who is an enthusiastic amateur prospector, has come across a shale deposit usually found on the top of coal, and samples sent to the Mines Department have been favourably reported upon as I bearing distinct evidences of coal. An I expert from Westport is now in the disI triefc examining the locality, and probably ! more will be heard of the find in a few days.—Grey town Standard. It is probable a movement will be initiated in Feilding shortly, says the Star, to light the borough with electricity. A local gentleman is interesting himself in the matter, and is procuring information . from Sydney, also from several of the towns) in New Zealand which are lighted by elec-' tricity. Whether the cost will be met by the Borough Council, or by a company, will be left for the ratepayers to decide. If the scheme is carried to a successful issue it Avill certainly result in a great saving to both, ratepayers and private individuals. At a meeting at Shannon on Saturday night, Mr James Wallace read a legal opinion from Mr W. B. Edwards, Wellington, as to the right of the settlers of Moutoa, as represented by the Mukaka Hiver Board, to raise an embankment against flood, when, by so doing, the water was forced over the low-lying lands of settlers living on the Shannon side of the river. The opinion was to the effect that the settlers could defend themselves from flood waters, but could not erect a bank if it forced water on to the lands of others. , At the suggestion of Mr Nation, a deputation was appointed from Shannon to meet the members of the Mukaka Kiver Board and the settlers of Moutoa, and discuss the ouestion.
