HARBOUR BOARD.
j The monthly meeting of the Wellington Harbour Board was held on Thursday, the 23rd. Present Messrs T. J. W. Gale (chairman), W. Booth, C. W. Brown, F. H. Fraser, J. H. Heaton, Captain Rose and the Mayor. FINANCES. The Chairman reported as follows as regarded the Board's finances: Credit balance, current account, .£5379 7s lOd; credit balance, imprest wages account, .£280; amount at fixed deposit, .£31,360. The amount required for payments was .£3473 4s 2d, made up as follows: —Accounts and wages, .£IBSO 2s 3d ; progress on contracts, .£1221 19s 8d; salaries for May, £4Ol 2s 3d. THE CHAIRMAN'S REPORT. The Chairman reported that the tender of Mr Archibald Whiteford for contract No. 77, for the construction of Shed O,
Jervois quay, being the lowest, and found to be in order, had been accepted for the sum of £1392 17s 4d; that Mr Whiteford had elected, in lieu of finding bondsmen, to make a cash deposit, and that the amount of deposit (£180) had been placed on fixed deposit with the National Bank of New Zealand, Limited, for a period of six months; that the Board, on August 15th, 1889, passed a resolution to grant a foreshore license at a peppercorn rental to the Petone Naval Artillery Volunteers for their boatskids on Petone beach, and that the license has now been signed by the lieutenant commanding. He moved that the seal of the Board be affixed to to the foreshore license. This was agreed to. WHARVES ANI> ACCOUNTS COMMITTEE. The Wharves and Accounts Committee recommended—That the engineer be authorised to call for tenders for contract No. 31, for the supply of hydrant boxes and hydraulic valves necessary for the extensions in progress at the Queen's Wharf; that, application having been received from the coal-dealers of Wellington seeking a reduction in the weighbridge charges on coal, the Board abolish the difference between the charge for weighing two and four-wheeled vehicles and reduce the price per ticket to id, with a discount for cash of 12.\ per cent, on books sold containing 50, 100 and 200 tickets. These recommendations were agreed to, and the secretary submitted a draft of bylaws to carry out the proposed change, and to provide for maximum load on twowheeled vehicles, as adopted on the recommendation of the Vehicular Traffic Committee.
