OUK NEW SEEIAL STOEI An Original Novel by W-. Clark Russell TKANSPOKTED. THE ROMANCE OF A CONVICT SHIP. WE are pleased to b 3 able to announce that the Proprietors of this Journal have secured the sole rights of serial publication for the North Island of New Zealand of an entirely new romance by that popular writer, Mr W. Clark Russell. Mr Russell's name is well-known to all lovers of fiction as that of one of the first; novelists of tho day ; and in his own line, that of a writer of seastories, his reputation has long been recognised wherever the English language is spoken. Ever since his first book, " The Wreck of tho Grosvenor," was published the critics have hailed him as the legitimate successor of, and rival to, Captain Marryatt and Michael Scotfc. His knowledge of the sea and sea-life is unapproachod by any living author, his style is clear and vigorous, he has always an interesting story to tell and he weaves into his inimitable tale.-; the ever pleasing topic of love, without which, as Mr Walter Eesant has said, just recently, no English novel can be permanently popular. The novel we are about to publish is entitled, " Transportation," The Romance of a Convict Ship," and is Mr Russell's latest, and, so the author says, his best work. The serial right* for America brought an immense sum, and it was only with considerable difficulty, and at heavy expense-, that the editor of the Mail has been able to secure the right of publication for this island. We have read tho advance proofs of the first few chapers, and can assure our readers that they have a rich treat in store. The publication of. the story will commence in next woek's issue of the Mail.
