MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Malcolm McCallum, a boardinghousekeeper at Edendale, was charged before Mr C. E. Eawson, S.M., with unlawfully selling beer, whisky and port wine, without being duly licensed. Two witnesses, Wickland, who said he lived in Dunedin, and Charles Cameron, who stated that he was engaged by the police at 7s per day, deposed that they went to the house of defendant, and were served with several glasses of liquor by defendant, who received payment for them. Other witnesses deposed that no liquor was sold. His Worship said the uncorroborated evidence of informers was always taken with caution. The men had not shown themselves to be naturally truthful, and both being strangers it was improbable defendant would sell liquor to them. The case was dismissed. A similar charge against Edward Attwood, of Fortrose, was also dismissed. His Worship said he would not believe either of the informers, Wickland and Cameron, on his oath. If the evidence of men like these were to be believed, no man's life or property would bo safe.
