LATE TELEGRAPHIC.

Auckland, May 19. William G. Lloyd-Quentery, cricketer, has been arrested at Tangitaroria on a charge of horse-stealing, also of larceny as a bailee of a gun at Dargaville. At the annual meeting of the Auckland Benevolent Society the balance - sheet showed a sum to credit of <£42. j Auckland, May 21. | A number of carpenters, bricklayers and [ plasterers waited upon the Hon William Jennings, M.L.C., and asked him to represent to the Premier, who is also Minister of Public Works, the desirability of getting the Auxiliary Asylum at Auckland, recently destroyed by fire, re-erected on the co-operative principle. The deputation represented about 100 men. The Premier to-day replied as follows : —“ The application to have the work done as suggested will receive the favourable consideration of the Government, and I will bring the matter before my colleagues. Instructions have been given to have the plans and specifications prepared forthwith.” It is stated that two Natives named Heremaia Hiku and Eremihia have been arrested beyond Kaikohe charged with child stealing. Russell, May 20. At a large and representative meeting of residents of Russell and neighbourhood resolutions were carried protesting strongly against the reported intention of opening the southern section of the northern division of the oyster fisheries, which has already been completely worked out. It was freely stated that to re-open the section would result in the annihilation of the oyster in the North. Woodville, May 20. A shock of earthquake was experienced at 5.30 o’clock yesterday afternoon. Invercargill, May 21. The Invercargill South School Committee has resolved to ask the Minister of Education to introduce an amendment to the Education Act, giving committees voting powers in the election of members of the 1

Education Board;? in proportion to the average attendance at their schools, and suggesting as a fair basis one vote for each school up to 100 of average attendance, and an additional vote for evei\y 100 exceeding that number. W aim ate, May 21. At a meeting of the Executive of the New Zealand Workers’ Union a resolution was passed asking the Government to legislate in the direction of preventing station holders from calling their shearers’ rolls at publichouses dining the shearing time. This custom is prevalent in the McKenzie country and other places throughout New Zealand. Napier, May 21. There is a peculiar state of things in connection with the unemployed here. Complaints have from time to time been made that the reports of the Labour Bureau as to the state of the labour market here are not accurate. This appears to be due to a marked disinclination to register with the Bureau. The other day a meeting of the unemployed was held, when the Mayor was informed by the police that only one man had registered. He advised them to register in view of several Government building contracts being put in hand. Since then 80 more names, many those of carpenters, have beenjhanded to the Mayor, but only two or three have been registered at the Bureau. The only reason given by the men when asked at a meeting why they did not register was that they feared they would be prosecuted for having no visible means of support. The Mayor endeavoured to reassure them on that point, but apparently unsuccessfully. A considerable number of carpenters will soon be required, and the police are to select them from the registered list; but there are not enough carpenters on the list. The bulk of the men are undoubtedly capable, and anxious to work ; but for some unaccountable reason will not go the right way to get it.
