Tlie new firefoell for the 3?etone Borough Council, which has been cast at Messrs Luke and Sons’ yard, was tested on Friday morning in the presence of the Mayor (Mi R. C. Kirk), Captain Austin (of the Petone Fire Brigade), and Captain Kemsley (of the Wellington Fire Brigade). The test was a most satisfactory one, all present expressing the opinion' that it was an admirable casting*. The cast proves to be lcwt heavier than was anticipated, and this will involve an extra cost of <£s 12s, and Messrs Luke have given a donation of <£l Is toward this amount. The new bell was taken to Petone on Saturday. A survey of the land in the vicinity of Wellesleyroad is being made by the Corporation with a view to ascertaining the cost of forming a recreation ground there. The Rotokino, which arrived from Newcastle yesterday week, brought 2500 tons of coal, of which 1000 are for this port. She also brought 19 pieces of hard wood for the Queen’s Wharf extension.
