HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Hutt County Council was held on Tuesday. Present — Councillors H. Cook (chairman), J. Wakeham, C. W. Brown, D. Speedy, W. Jillett, F. A. Majendie, F. Bradey, H. A. Field and G. Brown.
A letter was received from the Assistant Surveyor-General stating that possibly the road running along the Belmont stream might be considered as one going along a river bank, and if so it could not be closed. It was resolved that the chairman and Councillor Speedy wait on the Survey Department and ascertain what is the definition of the word “river.” A memorandum was received from Mr Brandon stating that if the Belmont stream is of sufficient magnitude to fall within the common meaning of the word ‘river,” then the road along the same cannot be closed.
A letter was read from the Colonial Secretary’s Department asking for an explanation of the discrepancy between the cost of the licensing elections of 1891 and 1894. A letter was also received from the same department stating that a voucher for .£6 19s 2d, being half the cost of the difference between the two elections, had been approved for payment. A slaughtering license was granted to Messrs A. and C. Crawford, of Miramar. The County Inspector was given pei'mission to make an estimate of the damage done to the Makara Road Board’s property by the late floods. The inspector was authorised to have the necessary works done at Silverstream, the cost not to exceed the balance of the =£soo granted for,this purpose. The sum of .£IOO was granted towards fencing the county road, Whareroa, between Paraparaumu and Waikanae. Councillor Majendie was authorised to expend the sum of £3O in the repair of bridges along the Ohariu road. Accounts amounting to £650 15s 4d were passed for payment.
