A STARTLING CONFESSION.

A MURDER OF MANY YEARS AGO. Auckland, May 13. Last night a man named Samuel Evison, a carpenter, gave himself up to Constable Forbes, of Hamilton, and confessed to having caused the death by drowning of a woman whom he pushed into the river at Nottingham in March, 1882. The constable got his statement taken before a Justice of the Peace. Evison appeared perfectly sane. He stated that he knew the woman only by the name of Jenny, and was acquainted with her only three weeks. She was employed in the lace trade, and he states that she was 20 years of age, of dark complexion, with hazel eyes. At the time of the occurrence,he says, he was employed by Bell and Sons, contractors and builders, Sherwood street, and boarded with another carpenter in Waterway street, Nottingham. Evison states that his sister and mother reside in Retford, Nottingham. Constable Forbes brings Evison to Auckland to-morrow.
