THE ROTORUA NATIVE MEETING.
Rotorua, March 30.
After three weeks of parleying- at the Native meeting of chiefs here, representing most of the tribes of the two islands, a rupture has taken place owing to Petera te Pukuatua, Piriani and others withdrawing from thqmovement as now being conducted. The contention of Te Pukuatua is that under the Treaty of Waitangi the Queen has hitherto governed New Zealand consistently with the treaty, but Te Pukuatua condemned the Ngapoihi in initiating that treaty without first consulting with and obtaining the consent of the other chiefs of the two Islands, and it is equally wrong now, he urges, to attempt,as some were doing, the establishing of a Maori Parliament and Government without at all events first obtaining the assent and co-operation of every Maori in the Colony, and even then before taking such a serious step as establishing another Government every other legitimate means of remedying their grievances should be exhausted, because much more misery might ensue therefrom to both races, and especially to the comparatively small remnant of the Maoris now inhabiting New Zealand. Hone Heko is expected back from Auckland to-night, and it will be interesting to knowhow he will act under the circumstances. Meantime the so-called Maori Parliament continues to sit here.
