A fairly large audience congregated at the back of the Opera House on Saturday night, when addresses were delivered by Messrs A. R. - Atkinson and E. Taylor, under the auspices of the Prohibition League. Mr Atkinson spoke at some length on his grievances against our evening contemporary, and then gave a brief resume of the work accomplished in Ireland by Father Mathew, and deduced from his experiences the argument that it was useless to induce people to become total abstainers unless they had legislation for the suppression of the sale of alcohol. Mr Taylor said an article had recently appeared in the New Zealand Times advocating the starting of a new industry, in the shape of a whisky mill, to help the working people in New Zealand, and he Iwent on to argue against this project.
