A correspondent writes suggesting “ Pirani ” as the new name of Palmerston North. In support of his suggestion be writes —“ The requisites in a place-name are that it be easily pronounced by the inhabitants of the country and euphonious ; that there be no other place of the same name in the land ; that it admit of an easy contraction for use by the telegraphist and the stenographer; and, if possible (if it be npt descriptive of the physical character of the place), that it embody a fact in history -worth remembering. I suggest that the name ‘ Pirani ’ satisfies these conditions.” During last month 59 applications for patents were received in the Colony, 11. of them being applied for in this district. Within the same period 14 applications were made for registration of trade marks. Only one of these applications was contributed by the Wellington district.
