Letters from the National Wool Company of Australia in reference to opening up a wool trade with Japan, and from the London Ships Detention Committee in reference to the delay in delivery of the cargoes of sailing vesssls, were laid before the council of the Chamber of Commerce yesterday. The assistance of the Chamber was asked in both cases. No action was taken with regard to the wool question, and the other matter will probably be considered later on. The local agents of the Shaw, Sayill and Albion Company have been advised that the lonic left Rio for Plymouth on Sunday morning, with her cargo of frozen meat in good condition. On Thursday Mr R. Smith, of Onslow Park, brought through Pahiatua, en roule to his place, a mob of 41 purebred Lincoln ewes and three pedigree rams, all purchased from the well-known breeder Mr McHardy, of Hawke’s Bay (says the local Herald ). One of the rams was bred by Mr Tanner, and purchased by Mr McHardy for 55 guineas ; another was bred by Mr Wilson, and purchased for 50 guineas; and the third was bred by Mr Collins of Kaikora and sold for 45. guineas. Mr Smith realises the importance of keeping good sheep, and has secured an addition which will greatly improve his flocks. Sheep-owners will be interested to learn that a small syndicate has recently been formed in London for the purpose of sending chilled meat from the colonies to London, and a chamber has been secured in the s.s. Gothic for this purpose, the temperature in which is to be kept at 26deg. This will be the first attempt to take chilled meat from New Zealand, and if the experiment is successful the value of the meat will be enhanced in the Home market at least Id per lb. Meat properly chilled is supposed to retain all its freshness and natural colour for at least sixty days, and has none of the disadvantages of the thawing process which frozen meat has to undergo.
