THE SALARIES OF GOVERNORS.
London, March 28.
The Earl of Kintore considers the lowering of the salaries has materially added to the difficulty of selecting Governors for the colonies. Sydney, March 29. The Bill reducing the future Governor’s salary to .£SOOO was read a second time on a division by 36 votes to 31 in the Legislative Assembly to-day. The Bill then passed through committee. The Premier, in speaking on the Bill, agreed that it was an opportune time to consider the matter, but said that if the Bill passed in its present form it would mean a reduction including allowances to £4OOO. The Government intended to reduce the allowances by over <£2ooo, and he asked the House to leave the matter in the hands of Ministers.
Sir Henry Parkes very strongly opposed the Bill. He said that in order to get a competent man to fill the office it might
be necessary, and might be better, to pay ten or even twenty thousand a year. There was plenty of room for retrenchment else* where, and it would be far better m the true interests of the colony to leave the Governor alone. He advocated the abolition of pensions to Government servants. Sir Henry Parkes voted against the Bill.
