Captain Turner, the officer in charge of the roads in the Wellington district, has received instructions from the Government to start a road-making party shortly at the northern end of the Alfredton-Weber road. It is intended that only men who are in a position to take up and settle down upon land in the neighbourhood of the works will be engaged, and that the system of requiring them to work alternately half their time upon the road and the other half upon their sections will be enforced. A fire occurred at one o’clock on Friday morning in a seven-roomed house situated on the Hutt main road. The building was completely destroyed. The house, which was unoccupied, was owned by Mr Edward Hayes, Lower Hutt, and was insured fof I ■£2oo in the Commercial Union Office,
