AS OTHERS SEE US.

The following is from an Australian exchange : —lt is probably because Mr Seddon is a real live politician that the prejudice of political failure in New Zealand has been aroused so bitterly against him. He has a definite policy which is too active to suit Conservative sentiment, and which, conflicts with the views of those who believe that the interests of the many should be sacrificed to the wants cf the few. The familiar weapons of misrepresentation and abuse are employed against him, but the New Zealand Premier is pachydermatous; enough to withstand shafts of this kind without much injury. In his effort to make the country prosperous, the people happy and contented, lie is ready to pursue paths which his opponents condemn as leading to rank Socialism. His opinion is that close settlement is more conducive to prosperity than large sheep runs, and he has gained many enemies by attempting to remove the evils of land monoply. The financial administration of the Government has been assailed, but if the promise of a gross surplus of .£350,000 be realised, Mr Turner will be disposed to copy the methods which can produce such a result. The problem of cheap money to agriculturists has been brought in the way of solution by a system of advances to settlers which promises well, and is likely to relieve them from the heavy rates of interest which bring ruin as their result. Mr Seddon may not be highrtoned, but Be has go.
