From a splendid start, by the aid of Crawford’s starting machine, Lady Zetland was the first to show out prominently, but once in his stride Monte Carlo went to the front with Lady Zetland at his girths, Ben Godfrey third and Rangipuhi and Dreamland close together. Passing the stand Monte Carlo was still followed closely by Lady Zetland, Dreamland, Ben Godfrey, and Rangipuhi, who had dropped back last. At the three-quarter-mile post Dreamland went up to Monte Carlo, and a,t about a mile and a quarter she was in front, the pair haying placed a large gap between themselves and the other three. Before, the quarter-mile post was reached Dreamland had shot her bolt, and then Rangipuhi, who had come with a great rattle, joined issue with Hobbs’mare. Before they turned into the straight it was seen that the issue lay between Lady Zetland and Rangipuhi. The latter once got his head in front, but it was only momentarily, for Derrett, on the inside, sat down on the mare, White also vigorously riding Rangipuhi. Inside the distance post the pair were locked together, and so they raced up the straight, the verdict being in doubt until the winning post was reached, when Lady Zetland was landed a winner by a head, amidst enthusiastic cheering.
