Master-ton, March 6. The leases for members of tho Masterdon Reform Special Settlement Association are now lying- at the Masterton Post Office awaiting- signature. In spite of the small proceeds of the late show tho Masterton Horticultural and Industrial Society hopes to have a substantial credit balance after paying all accounts. ' Another attempt was made to rob the Masterton railway station on Tuesday night. An entrance was'effected by breaking the same window in the statipnmaster’s office as before, the station ladder being ' used to reach tho window. Tho safe, which contained a good round sum of money, was shifted from the wall and the knob broken off with a crowbar. The burglar, or burglars,, must. have been disturbed in their .work, for the crowbar was left behind. Tho police have the matter in hand. ■ March 7. Masterton, March 12. The weekly meeting of the North Wairarapa Liberal Association was bold on Monday evening, Mr T. E. Price occupying tho chair. Tho question of old age pensions was discussed, and other business transacted.

Mrs Agnes Thompson, an old resident, is lying seriously ill, having been seized with a stroke of paralysis. A meeting of the Street-widening Committee of the Masterton Borough Council •was held on Monday evening, there being present His Worship the Mayor and Councillors Feist, Cullen an I Mutrio. It was decided on the motion of the Mayor, that Perry street be widened as far as the property owners give the land, and the street bo made to the full width in such parts. The consideration of further action for widening the remainder of Perry street was adjourned for a fortnight. A house at Akura, occupied by an old Nativo named Rawkete, was totally destroyed by lire this afternoon. Rawkete narrowly escaped losing his life, beingdragged out by a young Native named Ilaraitana after being burned severely about tho head and arms. Mr W. G. Beard has given notice to move at the next meeting of the Masterton School Committee that the Town Lands Trust be asked to make a grant for teaching shorthand and typewriting in tho public school. Mr 11. Parata addressed a big meeting of Natives at Te Ore Ore yesterday. A committee was appointed to assist in furthering the cause of temperance, education and religion. The Masterton Hospital Trustees passed estimates for the ensuing year this afternoon. The estimated expenditure is <£s2 above the estimated revenue. Masterton, March 13. There are a large number of visitors in town for the Masterton-Opaki Races tomorrow. The fortnightly meeting of tho Masterton Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening, Ilis Worship the Mayor pvesicling. It was decided to widen a portion of Perry street, and it was resolved to take sbeps to have other streets in the borough widened.

There is a lot of sickness in and around Masterton just now. Mr J. Simms, who took a prominent part in the performance of “ The Sorcerer ” recently, and who, during the time he has been in Masterton, has identified himself with several musical institutions, left today en route for Japan. Considerable comment has been caused through tho action of the Masterton School Committee in recommending the Education Board to appoint tho main school as the place for the annual meeting of householders, as tho most convenient building. Two yea r s ago the committee asked that the meo Jug he held in the Drißshed, as the school was so far out of town, and there is a strong feeling at present that the Drillshed should be the place of meeting, The change of opinion of tho School Com* mittee is inexplicable.
