Wanganui, March 8. At the Supreme Court to-day before His Honor Judge Richmond, after a hearing extending over 11 days, the case Grant v. the Manawatu Road Board, a claim of .£I2OO for alleged damage to property by drainage,! was concluded. The jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff for <£so on two counts of <£4s and <£s respectively. The question of costs and the entering of judgment was reserved. ■ ■■/•■.•W...Wanganui, March 12. All arrangements for the ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the new Wanganui Hospital are complete. The Premier is to officiate, and the "Volunteers, Friendly Societies, members of local bodies, &c., will attend. The ceremony takes place on Thursday afternoon.* Dunedin, March 8. The New Zealand Drug Company (Limited) has declared a dividend of per cent. > for the half-year ending 31sfc January, and carried forward £13,453. ' Auckland, March 8. The Crown Lands Department are taking active steps in the direction of opening up for settlement as soon as possible such areas of land as have been “acquired by the Government in the King Country. H.MiS. Qrlando has sailed for Melbourne direct. The Katoomba leaves for Samoa on the 13th. .. . .. Auckland, March 9. At a meeting of the City and the Victoria Rifle Companies, which had contemplated disbanding, it was decided to go on, as the new regulations are more practicable and less exacting.
Auckland, March 11
At the inaugural music lecture by Herr Schmitt in connection with the Auckland University College, the Hon J. A. Tole presented the Countess of Onslow’s medals —in the senior division to Miss Emily Reeve, and in the junior division to Miss Ethel Catherine Wilson. Three certificates were presented to students going on for the degree of Bachelor of Music. The Chairman stated that Herr Schmitt had received word that the Queen would be happy to accept a musical composition which he proposed to write and dedicate to her.
Auckland, March 12
At a meeting of creditors in the estate of Thomas Fisher, farmer, Fairburn, Mr John Lawson, Official Assignee, read a list of assets and liabilities as rendered by the bankrupt. The liabilities were set down at £305, and the assets at £2. The debtor had been adjudged bankrupt upon the petition of Miss Wrigley in connection with the libel action in which she was the plaintiff and the bankrupt defendant, in what is known as the Fairburn school case. It was resolved, “ That the bankrupt be required to fui'nish to the Official Assignee a balance-sheet and statement of his receipts and expenditure since January 1, 1893.” It was also resolved, “ That upon the requisite funds being furnished, the Official Assignee summon tho bankrupt, his wife, and any other persons he may think fit for examination in reference to the bankrupt’s dealings, and particularly as to an alleged transfer of the bankrupt’s pi operty to his wife in March last.”
Christchurch, March 8. Staff-Sergeant-Major Barrett, instructor for nine years to Canterbury Volunteers, has received the Imperial medal for mei'itorious service. A petition from 90 residents near the Belfast Freezing Works, asking that a block of land in the vicinity should be acquired under the Land for Settlements Act and cut into small allotments, has been forwarded to the Government. Christchurch, March 11. The year’s receipts of the Canterbury Society of Arts were £1345, and the expenditure £1422. The assets are £4109, and'the liabilities £7CO. The City Council to-night passed a resolution expx*essing the opinion that local bodies should not be called on to relieve the unemployed, but that the whole matter should be dealt with by the Government as a colonial question, and strongly urging that some adequate and timely provision be made this winter to relieve local bodies from the responsibility hitherto cast upon them. A number of burglari es have been reported lately, and to-night two boys about 12 years of age were arrested on the charge of being concerned in four of them. Most of the stolen property was found at the homes of tlie boys. > Invercargill, March 11.
At Wyndham to-day Edward Attwood, of'Forti'ose, pleaded guilty to a charge of selling liquor without a license, and was fined £lO, and a large quantity of spirits and beer that had been seized on the premises was confiscated. Napier, March 11. At the monthly meeting of the Charitable Aid Board to-day it was resolved on the motion of the Hon J. D. Ormond to request the Government to make grants of land cn which to settle the unemployed of Hawke’s Bay. On the motion of the Hon J. D. Ormond, the following resolution has been passed by the Charitable Aid Board :— *‘ That in view of the probable want of employment in the district during the ensuing winter, the chairman communicate with the Government and ascertain whether the Government will set aside two or three blocks of land in the most suitable places open, (1) for • settlers, families, &c., (2) for providing employment in bushfelling or other improvement of Crown lands, and ascertain further to what extent in money will the Government provide funds for such settlers; and that a committee report to next meeting whether quarries could be ojiened in the different Hawke’s Bay counties in which work could be provided for single men and others applying for assistance.”
