GARDEN FETE.

A garden fete in aid of St. Mark's Church Debt Extinction Fund was held in the grounds of Wellington College on the afternoon and evening of Feb. 20, and was largely attended. At the invitation of Mr C; E. Zohrab, chairman of the committee, Bishop Wallis, who was accompanied by Mrs Wallis, opened the fete. His Lordship hoped the fete would be as successful as its promoters anticipated. It was held in aid of the Church Debt Extinction Fund, and was worthy of their support, and it had his entire sympathy. The debt had been reduced from a large amount during the past 10 years to about .£l5O, at which it stood at present. Miss Marjorie Motley presented Mrs Wallis with a fine bouquet of flowers. The grounds presented a particularly gay appearance in the afternoon, with the crowds of visitors, the booths, the maypole, and an immense Chinese umbrella, presented by Mr James Smith, Te Aro House, under the pleasant shade of which Miss Kayll and her assistants dispensed fruit and flowers. Mesdames Firth, Ward, Rawnsley and Motley, with a number of assistants, had charge of the refreshment stall ; and Mesdames Tatum and Wilson presided over a fancy goods stall. Both young and old patronised a couple of bran tubs, which were in charge of Mesdames Coffey and Stock. A feature of the gathering was a maypole dance by a number of children in fancy costumes, under the direction of Mrs Francis, of the Mount Cook School. The arrangements for the fete were carried out most successfully by a. committee consisting of Messrs Zohrab (chairman) and Blow, and Mesdames Kayll, Fitzgerald, Motley, Stock, Firth and Rawnsley. The Garrison Band, under the cchductorship of Mr Oakes, played selections during the day. Over ,£4O were taken at the stalls and gates, but it is expected this sum will be considerably augmented "when the returns for the tickets sold are received.
