THE CHURCHES.
The- Bishop of Wellington preached at St. Peter's Church on Sunday night in the presence of a crowded congregation. The anniversary services in connection with Trinity Wesleyan Sunday school, Newtown, were held on Sunday, there being large congregations present. The Rev J. Ward preached in the morning, and the Rev R. J. Murray in the afternoon, when there was a floral service, the flowers being afterwards sent to the Hospital. Ihe evening service was conducted by the Rev W. Baumber. Musical selections were contributed by the children of the Sunday school, assisted by the choir, Mr C. D. Mackintosh, who is superintendent of the school, being conductor, and Mr A. Hoskins organist. Collections were taken up during the day on behalf of the school. The musical services at St. Mary's Cathedral on Sunday were unusually interesting. Guonod's "Messe Solonnelle" was sung, and the three soloists were members of the Opera Company now in Wellington—Mrs Neilson, soprano; Mr Neilson, tenor ; and Mr Deane, bass. Miss Kelly played the oigan accompaniments, an orchestra under the lead of Mr Ho top also being present. Mr S. Cimino conducted. The performance was a capital one, the soloists especially singing splendidly. Before Mass Mr Neilson sang admirably Bellini's "Veni Creator," and at the offertory Mascheroni's " Ave Mai*ia" was given with great taste by Mrs Neilson. Master C. Cimino played the violin obbligato. Amongst the orchestra was Mrs Lelievre, of Hastings. Mr INeilson sang "The Holy City" at the evening service. The anniversary soiree in connection with the Trinity Wesleyan Church Sunday school was held on Tuesday afternoon. At 6.30 a substantial tea was served in the schoolroom, at which there was a large attendance, the lady teachers of the school acting as dispensers of the refreshments. At 7.30 a largely-attended meeting was held in the church, the Rev J. Ward, pastor, presiding. The annual report of the school, read by Mr J. Danks (secretary), stated that the scholars number 243, and that the average attendance is 178, a great improvement on that of the previous year. The treasurer (Mr C. E. Luxford) also presented his report. The officers are as follow:—Superintendent, Mr C. D. Mackintosh; secretary, Mr J. Danks: assistant-secretary, Mr W. Costello ; librarian, Mr A. de Castro ; assistant librarian, Mr L. Kitchen; treasurer, Mr C. E. Luxford. The committee is composed of the foregoing officers and Messrs ' Boxall, Fairchild, Long, Swiney, Green, Mellville, Murrell and Norbury. The church was very tastefully decorated, and the children sang a number of songs and anthems, assisted by an orchestra conducted by Mr C. D. Mackintosh. Addresses were given by various speakers.
