RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
An accident occurred to Monday morning'sdown Manawatu train. It appears that a ballast train had been shunting at Tawa Flat, and when the passenger train came along went on the siding to allow it to pass by. The points of the siding, however, were by some mischance left ppen, and the consequence was that the passenger train, instead of going straight bn, ran into the siding, and collided with the ballast train. ! A scene of some confusion ensued. Considerable alarm was felt by some of the passengers, and ladies who were in the train shrieked and became very excited, but beyond a severe shaking no one was in any way injured. The engine of the passenger train left the rails' and cut up the permanent way for some distance; two of the. rails were displaced, and the tender and many of the trucks were damaged. The passengers were brought to Wellington by another train, which was sent for, and arrived at their destination about an hour and a half behind time.
