SWIMMING.
The swimming sports in connection with the Star Boating Club took place on Saturday afternoon, and were fairly well attended, despite the unseasonable weather, among those present being a number of ladies. There was a good number of entries in most of the events, some of which were very keenly contested. The finish for the 200yds Handicap was very exciting, H. H. Dacre, the scratch man, winning by about six inches from W. D. Home. The 440yds event was postponed until some evening this week. Afternoon tea was provided by the Club, and dispensed by Miss Blair. The following were the officials:— Starter, Mr E. Jackson; judges, Messrs W. H. Field; G. H. Bethune and J. D. Tripe j handicappers, Messrs W. H. Morrah and F. Pownall; secretary, Mr J. D. Tripe. The results of the various events are as follow : 100yds Handicap.—W. D. Home, lOsec, 1; W. D. McKellar, 12sec, 2; H. H. Dacre, scr, 3. Four started. Won by a foot. Maiden Race, 50yds.—W. H. Tripe, 1 ; W. A. Wiggins, 2; S. Hume, 3. Won by half a length. ./ Fancy Diving.—A. Smithers, 1 ; A. Duncan, 2. Coxwains' Race, 50yds.—C. W. Hazelden, scr, 1; R. L. Evett, 20sec, 2; W. Brown, 15sec, 3. Long Dive. —H. E. Morrah, 1 ; W. D. McKellar, 2. Five competed. 200yds Handicap Race.—H. H. Dacre, scr, 1; W. D. Home, 20sec, 2; A.H. Barnett, 50sec, 3. Seven competed, and there was a very exciting finish between the first and second men. Headers.—S. W. Richardson, ,1; P.' G-. Didsbury and R. Pownall tied for second place. Obstacle Race.—A. Duncan, 1 ; W. H. Tripe, 2. These were the only starters. Greasy Pole Competition.—W; A. Gray. The final heat of the 300yds race of the Wellington Amateur Swimming Club was decided on Tuesday in Te Aro baths, and resulted in a win for W. J. Gaudin, J. Gamble second, and H. Drummond third, H. By Telegraph. — Press Association. Dunedin, February 23. At the Swimming Tournament to-day the 150yds Championship was won by W. Rice, who beat H. Maitland by five yards, in 2min Bsec. Auckland, February 23. The Early Closing Association Handicap at the Auckland Swimming.,olu.h,'sannual carnival was won by H. N. G6ldwat.ei?. The swimmer Placke swam from Rangitoto Reef to Cheltenham Beach to-day in a choppy sea. The distance is four nautical miles, and the feat had never previously been accomplished here. A steamer with a party on board accompanied him.
