An affidavit, filed recently in Melbourne by William McMahon, market gardener, alleged that on the 29th August, 1892, while working as a day labourer for the Brighton Town Council, he was sent for by Mr Thomas Bent, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, whom he had known for 30 years, and was asked to sign a paper, the contents of which were unkown to him. He subsequently discovered that the paper signed was a transfer to him by Mr Bent of 36,000 shares in the Australian City and Suburban Investment and Banking Company for an alleged consideration. Ten shilling calls since made upon these shares total .£40,324. McMahon's affidavit was filed with the object of having his name removed from the list of contributories. At a meeting of the Tramway employees it was unanimously resolved to hold the annual picnic on Christmas Day as usual. A committee consisting of Messrs G. Saxby, A. Burns, T. Knight, W. My, J. Wareham, J. McColl, B. North and H. Bussell (the four last-named to act as canvassers) was appointed to make all necessary arrangements in connection with the picnic, and to canvass the city for subscriptions and trophies. Mr G. Saxby was elected treasurer, and Mr W. Fly secretary. It was resolved to try and make arrangements with the Bailway Department for the conveyance of passengers, and if successful to issue tickets to the public. The Band of Mercy which has been formed in connection with the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is making good progress in Wellington, and the Inspector (Mr A. W. Smith) has recently started a branch among the school children at Masterton. Another branch will shortly be formed at Featherstou,
