Mr Freyberg, of Wellington, is returning to New Zealand. He proposes to promote, through the Government, a union of the colonies to conserve and sell timbers. There are five miles of London streets awaiting Australian wood for paving. The report that Jabez Balfour has escaped is denied. A London message states that Schweder and Co., wool merchants, have suspended payment. Their liabilities are estimated at .£IOO,OOO. , , The Hungarian Magnates Chamber has rejected a Bill recognising the Jewish religion by a majority of seven. A train conveying hop-pickers came into collision with a goods waggon at Chatham, and eight persons were killed. A coachbuilder named Morrison, of South Melbourne, murdered his wife by stabbing her and battering in her head. The cause is alleged to have been domestic unhappiness. Mr J. A. Isaacs, Attorney-General ol Victoria, has been re-elected. Mr Simon Fraser, of Victoria, states that Argentine traders are able to take 500 live cattle per week in the event of its being found possible to arrange for transport. Mr Moore, an Argentine trader, is sending an agent to Queensland to make enquiries. The death is announced of Earl Gray, aged 92. He was Under-Secretary for the Colonies from 1830 to 1833 (in his father’s Administration), Under-Secretary of the J Home Department, 1834 j Secretary of State
for War, 1835-9 (Lord Melbourne’s Ad ministration) ; and Secretary of State foi the Colonies, 1846-52 (Lord John Russell’s Administration).
