Dunedin, February 22. _ Notwithstanding the lugubrious prognostications of the weather prophets the Dunedin Jockey Club were favoured with beautiful weather for the first day of their Autumn Meeting, The attendance was not up to the best record, but it was very large, and ladies mustered largely to display their Cup dresses. Representatives were present from nearly every part of the Colony, while many were from Australia. Mr S. Powell officiated as starter with his usual efficiency, and Mr W. Miller was judge. The Cup race was a ‘ boil over;' it was in most respects a repetition of Occident’s victory last year, as Tempest made her own running all the way, and was never really headed. Thame might have had more to say but for the accidental breaking away of a stirrup leather when entering the straight. It is understood that Mr Stephenson did not have a penny on his mare except in a double with Huguenot. Mr Hazlett, his partner, had LI, and the trainer LI. In the Selling Two-year-old, Buddicombe, who rode Viscount the winner, failed to draw the weight, and a protest was entered, which will be considered to-night. The amount put through the machine was LB9IB, as against L 10.958 on the same day last year, Results ;

Stephenson's br c Outpost (Mcltroy) 3 28 Gitano, 107 Spinaway, 49 Persuasion, also started, From a good start Lakeshell was first to show in front, with Spinaway next and Persuasion following. This order was maintained for a furlong, when Spinaway joined Lakeshell. The others were well together, but Gitano soon commenced to tail off. Lakeshell had the lead rounding the bend and entering the straight increased it, with Spinaway next, Outpost third, and Response fourth. Once fairly in the run home, Response commenced to gain ground, and though the whips were out to Outpost, Lakeshell and Spinaway, O'Brien’s filly wore them down and won by a length. Outpost was three lengths away third, and Gitano last. Time, lmin 18Jsec. Dividends, L 3 9s and L 3. Dunedin Cup, of 600 sovs; second 60 sovs, third 30 sovs. Two miles and a distance. 57 Mr J. (Cochrane) 3 624 Clanranald, Bst 71b (Clarke); 59 Scot Free, 7st 91b (Gall); 113 Captive, 7st 41b (J. Ray) ; 103 Awarua Rose, 7st (Ross); 110 Wy vern, 6st 91b (Connop), also ran. Clanranald wao very fractious. From a beautiful start Clanranald on the inside was the first to break the line, but Tempest on the outside took up the running as they settled in their stride, with Captive second, and Thame just behind Clanranald. Round : ng by the windmill Awarua Rose closed up to Thame, and Wyvern was last of a pretty compact field. At the half-mile post Awarua Rose was third to Tempest and Captive, and Clanranald was last, but still there was no straggling. When the mile and a distance had been covered the order was still Tempest, Captive and Awarua Rose, and Thame was just heading Scot Free. Five furlongs, from home Clanranald seemed to be in difficulties, and Captive commenced to fall away evidently beaten. Prime Warden began to go up as they went along the back stretch, and at the top turn he was second to Tempest, and Thame and Clanranald here commenced to move up a hit; and bar Captive it was anything’s race. Tempest and Thame were almost abreast, but Tempest still led by a little as they rounded into the straight. At this point the boy on Thame asked the mare to make her effort, but his stirrup pulled through the iron, leaving her rider in difficulties, Price coming almost off. Tempest then went on in front, with Thame chasing her as best she could, and the local mare eventually won rather easily by a clear length, Prime Warden being three lsngths away third, and then came Clanranald, Wyvern, Scot Free, Awarua Rose and Captive in that order, all pulling up. From a fair start Heather Bell was at once prominent, with Saracen next, and Heather Bell on the extreme outside showing a bold front. After a furlong had been travelled Huguenot had run into sixth plaoe. At the five-furlong post Heather Bell still led, with Huguenot second, and Saraeen third. At the top turn Kulnine commenced to move up, and Lady Zetland had taken third place, with Saracen fourth. Heather Bell led into the straight by a clear length, and Saracen took second place, with Conjurer third, and Kulnine fourth. A fine finish took place down the straight, but none of them could catch Heather Bell, who won by a length and a half, Conjurer just managing to beat Kulnine at the post.
