HASTINGS.
(by telegraph.—own correspondent.) Hasiings, February 22.
The meeting held at the Theatre last evening to devise means for assisting the fund being raised to aid the Queensland sufferers was largely attended and very enthusiastic. Mr George Eilis, Mayor, presided, and made a touching spoeoh. A large and influential committee was formed to make a house to house canvass. It ia also proposed to give a band concert on the racecourse on Sunday week, when it is expeoted three brass binds will take part. The Mayor will ask the Commissioners to run a speoial train and give the prooeeds to the fuuds. The band will also give an open air concert on Saturday night, and a progress subscription will be taken up. Hope is expressed that the counoil will decide on the No. 3 engine instead of No. 2, as the latter will only cost £IOO more, and the extra water will be equal to another engine. A few pounds should not be allowed to stand in the way when arrangiag for such a necessary proteotion.
