LAND FDR SETTLEMENTS.
COMMISSION ISSUED TO BOARD OF LAND PURCHASE COMMISSIONERS.
It will be remembered that the Land for Settlements Act passed last session makes provision for the appointment of a Board of Land Purchase Commissioners, consisting of the Surveyor-General, the Commissioner of Crown Lands, and the District Land Registrar of the district in which is situated any land proposed to be acquired under the Act; the duty of the board being 1 to ascertain by the valuation of a competent valuer, and by such other means as seem to them fit, the value of any lands which the Governor may propose to acquire for the purposes of this Act, and to report as to the demand for settlement in the locality where it is proposed to purchase the same.’ As a large number of offers of private lauds have already been made a commission has been issued for the board to act in Canterbury and Otago, and it is now engaged upon its work in the former provincial district.. Three members form a quorum, ana Mr Cromhie (Commissioner of Taxes), who is the fourth member, left for Christchurch at the beginning of tho week join his fellow Commissioners. After finishing their investigations in Canterbury, they will proceed on to Otago. For the purpose of acquiring land under the Act, the Colonial Treasurer is empowered to borrow money not exceeding L 50.000 in the aggregate in any one year.
