After the victory of St Hippo in the Cup on Boxing Day, the owner of the horse, L. D. Nathan, aud his brother Aired Nathan, gave the Mayor of Auckland £25 towards the purohase of a large painting, by Steele, of the late J. T. Maokelvle, intended to be placed in the art gallery. A local bicyclist, J. Selby, ridiog a safety bicycle, travelled on Monday from Newton, Auckland, to Hamilton East, a distance of 88 miles, in seven houre 40 minutes. The Hon Mr Cadman, who arrived from the South today, left for Whangarel to-night on private business. Christchcrch, December £B. It is stated that an important ohange is to take place in the management of the Cathedral services, and that the Rev Walter Harper, incumbent of St Michael's, will resign the incumbency, and take control and charge of the Cathedral services subject to the Bishop, and will also be the principal of the upper department of Christ's College. The change will not take effect till after the Bishop's return from England. Whittle's hotel at the Waiau, burned down on Sunday, was insured for £IOOO In tho Liverpool, Loudon and Globe. A third of that sum was reinsured in the Standard and National. The stook and furniture were insured for £IOSO in the North British, three-fourths of which was reinsured in tho London and Lancashire, Sun and Phoenix offices.
