TROTTING.
CALENDAR. January 24.—Wellington Trotting Club's Summer Meet'ng. December 27 and 31.—Auckland Trotting Club's Summer Meeting. ' Mazeppa,' in the Otago Witness, comments very strongly on the handicaps of the Johnsonville Trotting Club. He says: —At the Johnsonville meeting the handicapper has made a range of lOOsec in the three-mile race and 30sec in the mile race. This is almost equivalent to saying that Rarus and Dakota are not wanted at the meeting. Fifty seconds should be the extreme limit at three miles. Horses that have no show within that range should be kept to their proper business of dragging corpses to the cemetery. The Wellington Trotting Club's Summer Meeting is to be held at Island Bay on Tuesday, 24th January. £l7O will be given in stakes, the principal event being the Wellington Trotting Club Handicap (in saddle), of OOsovs, 2£ miles. The programme is admirably arranged so as to afford both harness and saddle trotters equal faculties for the display of their capabilities, and the entrance and acceptance fees are desirably low. There is a handicap for ponies and a Consolation Handicap in the programme. Nominations for all events except the Consolation Race close at 9 p.m. on Wednesday next, January 3rd, at the New Zealander Hotel. Owners are notified that orders to train on the course can be obtained on applicato the secretary. Protests have been laid against Mr J. Faloon's Prince 11., winner of the Club Handicap and Spring Handicap at the Johnsonville and Hutt County Trotting Club's Meeting on Boxing Day. The stewards have impounded the stakes pending the result of enquiries which they are making into the running and identity of the horse.
