THE CHEVIOT ESTATE.
PURCHASE BY THE GOVERNMENT.
We understand that the Government yesterday week, in Cabinet, decided to accept the offer of the owners of the Cheviot estate. They will therefore take the property by purchase under the provisions of the Land and Income Tax Act. The matter arose in this way : There was a difference of opinion about the value between the owners and the Land Tax Department. The Government assessor's value wa3 upheld by the Board of Reviewers. In consequence the owners offered the Government the property at their (the owners') valuation. This occurred some time ago. The Government thereupon got two separate valuations made by independent valuers. The result is the Cabinet decision to take the property at the offer made by the owners. All that remains is for both parties to come to the necessary agreements as to the preliminaries about possession, payment of the money, and so forth. This is the first instance of the kind that has occurred in the Colony. The Government, we may add, have given the matter the fullest consideration, being fully aware of the grave responsibility involved in the decision.
