Dr Newman, M.H.R., addressed a meeting of the electors at the Lower Hutt on Saturday evening. Mr Cudby, J. P., occupied the chair. The speech delivered by Dr Newman was in general the same as that delivered at Petone. The member affirmed himself a thorough believer in General Booth, but at the same time strongly objected to his scheme of deporting people for settlement in this Colony. He said the immigrants, being free agents, would leave the wet bush with its seclusion and flock into the towns to glut the labour market. He thought the scheme should be bitterly resented. It was the duty of each country to look after its own unfoitunates and to lift them up, and not merely ship them to another country to be a burden there. The speaker’s remarks on this topic were warmly applauded, and evidently were in entire accord with the feelings of the audience. After about an hour’s address the speaker sat down amid applause. Mr Whither moved a vote of tfcanks to Dr Newman for his address and continued confidence in him as a member. This motion was seconded by Mr F. Cooper and carried unanimously. A vote of thanks to the chairman brought to an end a satisfactory meeting. Afterwards the member for the district was asked by several of the audience if he would use his efforts to have the men’s waiting room at the Hutt railway station opened, as it would prove a great boon. He intimated that he had already bestirred himself in this matter, and expected shortly to receive an answer from the authorities.
