The newly appointed conductor of the Auckland Orchestral Union, Mr?4Arthur Towsey, arrived from Dunedin to-day. The party who propose to travel over the Stratford route are to leave on Monday morning next, going by train to Te Kuiti, then on horseback to Ohura Valley, and walking thence 40 or 50 miles on the track for Stratford. Westport, January 12. The number of days on which ram fell in this district for 1891 was S 3, which marks it the driest season since tha opening of the Coast. The average number of wet days for the four years previous to IS9I is 135. May and June were the driest months, with four web days each ; February, March, and April, the wettest, with nine days each. New Plymouth, January 13. At a meeting of tha Haroour Board this morning a letter from the Marine Department was read, drawing attention to the manner in which passengers were landed from eteame.s calling as this port. The Chairman of the Harbour Board, in reply, stated that had the dredge been here ia October, as promised, by this time the channel would have been cleared, and as large tonnage steamers would then have been able to have coma alongside tue wharf, there would have been no necessity for the boating service complained of.
