He was waited on by n deputation from the Dairy Associvtion, who asked his assistance iii securing the proper branding and recognition of its produce in the Home market, and also asked for a subsidy to push the produce. The Minister promised to give due consideration to the first request, and regards the second, promised a subsidy of £2 to £l, up to £2OO, as was done last year. Dunedin, January 1. At the meeting of (Jonvocation at Christchurch on Tuesday next to elect a representative to the University Senate, it is understood that Professors Baselam and L. Cohen (Christchurch) and W. D. Milne (Dunedin) will be proposed. K. Barclay, who was a candidate, has retired in favour of Mr Milne. It has been decided to confer the AssociateBhip of the School of Mines on three students, viz , F. B. Allen, M.A., A. Purdie, M.A., and It. A. Walcott. A man named William MoFee was committed for trial to-day for burglariously entering a dwelling, and stealing goods to the value of £3. Intimation has been received from Dr Maunsell, who went Home some time ago, that owing to the state of his health he does not intend to return. A deputation cf the unemployed waited on the mayor this morning. It was represented that upwards of a hundred men aie in urgent need of employment, some having been idle for two months, and aomo had not had employment since they ivere discharged from general work at Catlin’a river. Sir Walter Bailer, who has been visiting the mines at Lawrence, is well satisfied with the prospects of the Gabriel’s Gully Company. During the year 3470 ounces, value £13,300, haß been won from the mine, and besides paying the stipulated 8 per cent on preference shares this will enable the directors to reduce the debt and declare a small dividend. The manager calculates it will take 25 years to exhaust the ground now being washed. Auckland, January 6. The National Association have passed a resolution expressing an opinion that in ordei that JNew Zealand residents only should exercise the franchise the right to vote at Parliamentary elections should be restricted to persons who have been living for not less than twelve months in the Colony. An amendment was moved by Mr B. Mook in favour of womanhood sutirage, but was withdrawn. Auckland, January 7. The balance-sheet submitted at the annual meeting of the Auckland branch of the H.A.C.B. Society shows that the total sum to the credit of the various funds is £2514. Mr W. Doran has been re-elected president of the branch to-day. Mr T. W. Glover has left for Dunedin to attend the conference of the Temperance Alliance. Sir W. Fox is also to be present. The election of a member of the City Council for the East Ward, in the place of Mr W. Crowther, elected mayor, the return of Mr A. Kidd by a majority of 269 against Mr J. Butcher, the only other candidate. Auckland, January 8. The Hon. Mr Cadman announces that he will address his constituents at the Thames on Wednesday evening next. Auckland, January 11. The warship Tauranga was floated out of dook after a thorough overhaul. Miss Juliana Boyd, nieoe of the late Canon Boyd, of Leeds, died yesterday at her house in Ponaonby road. Miss Boyd was of considerable literary repute, and was an ardent antiquarian. Auckland, January 12.

Letters received here announce that Bishop Luck, who is at present in Europe, has been seriously ill from bronchitis, and has in consequence left England and returned to Italy. A cargo of 596 tons of coal was brought from Westport to-day by tha Wainui for the warship Tauranga. Christchurch, January 8.

A meeting of old settlers was held tonight, 34 being present, and Mr John Anderson in the chair. It was decided to form an Early Setclera Association, and a committee was appointed to draw up a constitution.

The annual meeting of the City Mission Home subscribers was held to night, the Mayor in the chair. Mr Herrick, superintendent, reported that during the year 15,628 meals had been given away ; 5036 beds had been made up, and £lll 10s 2d spent in outdoor relief. Since the establishment of tho Home three years ago, 59,449 meals have been given and 19,807 beds made up. Eight hundred parcels of clothing were given away during three years. The present liabilities are £SO, and the assets, including furniture, £309 14s. Last year’s receipts were £617 ISs 6d. All was expended but £2. Christchurch City Council decided to. night to join the Municipal Association. Cha Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association decided to refuse entries made by an exhibitor disqualified by the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association for

defiance of the officers of the latter Association. . January©.

At the Hawera Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday Wm. Buckle, of Waitara, was charged with stealing a sheep at Eltham, and was committed for trial. Bail was fixed at £IOO, and obtained. Masterton, January 10.

The loss sustained, by Mr Way land in the destruction of his flaxmill is about £3OO. There was no insurance.

The farewell banquet to be given to the Governor has been fixed for the 6th of February. New Plymouth, January 11.

The total quantity of butter exported from the breakwater only for the four weeks ended 2nd January was nearly 46 tons. In the same period a much largot quantity went by rail to Wellington, so that the total export for tho period is considerably over 100 tons. Invercargill, January 12.

The Post Office haß accepted the offer of the Bluff Harbour Board to carry mails to Stewart Island once a week for £2OO a year. Their steamer, which is large and powerful, will of course carry passengers and cargo. It is expected that the number of tourists and visitors to the Island will show a marked increase.

The case of a small runholder who was fined £3l for being 31 days behind in his payment of a half-year’s rent, £lo, was before the Land Board to-day, in the shape of an application for a refund of the fine. The Receiver of Land Revenue explained that he had, in accordance with previous practice, wired headquarters asking for instructions. In all previous similar cases he had been instructed to accept rents and forego the fine, but in this ca3e no reply had been returned, and he had no option buf to comply with the law. It was pointed out that the section of the Act bearing on

fining was permissive, and it is probable that on the applicant giving a satisfactory explanation of tho delay in paying the fine it would be made a nominal one.
