LOCK-UP ACCOMMODATION.
(press association). Masterton, December 3. Mr Hogg, M.H.R., has received the following communication from the Police Department on the subject of furnishing the lock-up with mattresses :—“ Sir, —I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 4th inst. regarding mattresses and proper accommodation being furnished to lock-ups, and to inform you that in no case are prisoners called upon to lie on boards, as blankets are supplied to all prisoners, both for ooveiing and to lie upon. Mattresses are condemned for police gaols and lock-ups on sanitary grounds, as it is found quits impossible to keep them sweet and clean, or in fact, wholesome. I am, however, obliged to you for calling my attention to this matter, and have now issued instructions that at all larger police stations one or more mattresses are to be kept on band, in case of being required in such cases as that quoted in your letters having recently ocourred at Danevirke.”
