THE PASTORAL ASSOCIATION.
There is a great deal of reason in Mr Levin’s complaint of the small support accorded to the Agricultural and Pastoral Association. To the stock owners and farmers a Metropolitan Society offers advantages greater than any country society can possibly procure for them. To the city population the operations of a Metropolitan Agricultural Society offer both amusement and profit. Anything that brings crowds into the city and promotes outside trade is highly profitable. Moreover, there is a direct profit always to the subscribers. Under the circumstances it is amazing that the number of subscribers is under 350. We quite agree with Mr Levin that there ought to be 1500. A broad basis of support like that would make the Association second to none in New Zealand. Wellington ought before long to be the first city in New Zealand in every respect. But if the citizens are not enterprising the •city will not attain to that position.
