EXPORTING POTATOES.
Mr R. Whiloy, farmer at Manakau, near Otaki, sends us the following particulars concerning a trial shipment of Fluke potatoes hich he sent home on the 30tli of December last year. He sent two oases, containing 601 b of Fluke potatoes in each. In the one the potatoes were wrapped separately in newspaper, and in the other packed in hay. Both cases reached home in splendid condition, the price realised was at the rata of £l4 per ton; more than three times the price realised in New Zealand. At the time of shipment. This success no doubt will induce Mr Whiley to go in for further but larger consignments of potatoes. This trial shipment would certainly seem to show that new kidney potatoes can be shipped from New Zealand and arrive in Loudon to a good market. The satisfactory condition in which they have arrived may be the result of careful packing. With reference to potatoes, there has lately been a very large demand for Ireland, mainly of the Champion variety, and the market value generally has advanced. Prices for Magnum Bonums are now about £6 10 per ton, and, as the value is likely to continue, there might this season be an opportunity for New Zealanders to send Home large consignments of potatoes.
