THE PHCENIX CLUB’S AVERAGES. The following are the batting and bowling averages of tho Phoenix Club (winners of
the Senior Cup). Moorhouse again comes out at the head of the batting with the splendid average of 51 ’4 for eleven innings, probably one of the best batting perform* ances of the season in New Zealand. Several other members of the Clnb have also obtained fair averages, no fewer than nine of them getting doable figure averages. Hewat is at the head of the bowling, but; Taylor’s performance is evidently a better one. BATTING.
Matches played, 6 ; won, 6; lost, 0 ; runs for, 1554 for 98 wickets ; runs against, 1252 for 116 wickets. Hewat bowled 3 wides, Benbow 1 no ball, Ogier 2 no balls, and Moorhouse 1 no ball. The Senior Cup matches were brought to a conclusion on Saturday. Each club has played six matches, and the Phoenix have won all the matches they have played.- The other clubs have each won two matches and lost four. _ The last act in connection with the recent match with Canterbury took place at the Caledonian Hotel, after the finish of the Pheenix-Rival game on Saturday, when the trophy presented by Mr Moorhouse to the highest scorer in the first inniDgs on the Wellington side, was handed over to the winner, Mr D. Fuller. Mr W. H. Benbow, who made the presentation, congratulated Mr Fuller on his success, and stated that from what he had seen of Mr Fuller’s play, he was sure there was a brilliant future before him in the cricket field. Mr Fuller suitably replied, when Mr Moorhouse proposed the umpires for the past season, coupled with the names of Mr Ashbolt, who, he stated, had not missed umpiring in a senior enp or ioterprovincial match for the past five seasons, and whose decisions had always given the greatest satisfaction ; aud Mr Guise. Both gentlemen briefly replied, and thanked the cricketers generally for the uniform kiudness they had received at their hands. Before the little ceremony concluded Mr Fuller’s health was drunk with great enthusiasm. The trophy won by Mr Fuller takes the form of a bat, whioh is one of the handsomest ever presented in Wellington. The Thorndon and Kilbirnie match, whioh was to have been played on the Basin Reserve on Saturday, did not eventuate, the latter team failing to turn up. During the past season the Thorndons have played five matches, losing four and drawing three, a very fair performance considering that the only ground they have had to practise on is the Railway Reserve at Thorndon.
