She is a large vessel, built of steel, and is fitted with the usual equipments for labour saving, having steam winches, derricks, and patent windlass, and is schooner tieged, with pole masts. She was built by W. Doxford and Sons, Sunderland. Her dimensions are as follows Length between perpendiculars, 365 f t; beam, 44ft 2in ; and depth of hold, 30fr. Her registered tonnage is 2460, or a gross measurement of 3808 tons. The hull, w hich is of steel, is divided into watertight compartments by six bnlkheads, and is also doublebottomed to the extent of 340 ft, and this gives a storage capacity of 655 tons of water ballast. The bridge deck amidships is 88ft in length, on the fore part of which is the chart-roorn and wheelhouse, fitted with steam stearing gear. Under the bridge deck are very comfortable quarters for the officers, who are accommodated on the starboard side, and the engineers on the port side, the galley, bakehouse and messrooms being also under the bridge deck. _ The crew are quartered in the forecastle, which is some 37ft in length. Her main decks are of iron, and her saloon, although small, is very comfortably fitted r.p, and contains four stateroom? with accommodation for 12 passengers. There are t.wo bathrooms, lavatories, &c., the panels of the saloon being of polished oak and teak, with gilt cornices, the settees and* revolving chairs being upholstered in_ crimson velvet. At the forepart of the saloon is a very

handsome cheffonier with marble top, over which is a huge mirror and clock. At the entrance to the saloon on the starboard side is the captain s cabin, and on the port side is the pantry and stewards’ room, the whole of the vessel throughout being fitted with electric light. As an instance of the amount of cargo’that she can carry, it may be stated that when she left London she had 4400 tons on board. She is fitted with all the latest improvements for carrying frozen mutton, her freezing chambers being capable of stowing 65,000 carcases. The refrigerating machinery is of the Haslam patent, and is the most powerful of its description, being two cold air engines, one of which is capable of throwing 120,000 ft of cold air per hour, and the other 85,000 cubic feet. This part of the machinery is under the control of Mr McAlister, who has held similar appointments on several of the steamers, and was in charge of the first sailing ship, the Dunedin, which took frozen meat from New Zealand. The Otarama is engined on the triple expansion system, and she is fitted with Hawke’s patent hot air forced draught machinery. The diameters of the cylinders are as follows : High pressure, 27in ; medium, 44in; and low pressure, 72in. The oiston stroke is 48in. The boilers are steel, and have a working pressure of 1601 b. The engines are of 460 horse-power nominal, or 2000 horse-power effective, the registered speed being knots on a consumption of 28 tons of coal per day. The engineering department is under the charge of Mr Yy. Elder (late chief engineer of the R.M.S. Aorangi), and who left that vessel to superintend the fitting up of the Otarama when purchased by the Company. She is commanded by Captain G. Scruby, and with him are the following officers Mr H. Barnes, chief ;Mr F. Winchesfcer (lato of the Rimutaka), second 5 Mr 1. L. Jones, third. When the Otarama was first built she was known as the Sea King, but with the change of ownership there followed a change of name, and in the New Zealand native nomenclature her present designation was found. She was berthed at the Railway wharf on Saturday afternoon, and expects to leave here again this week. THE R.M.S. lONIC. The R.M.S. lonic arrived in port at 6.30 am on Monday, and was berthed at the Queen’s Wharf an hour later. The following is a report of her passage supplied by [her purser ; She was to have left London on the 21st of February, but was detained owing to a dense fog. The following day the fog lifted, and a start wa3 made, but by the time Gravesend was reached the fog had settled down thicker than ever. Moored ship at Gravesend, and remained there until the 26th February. During all this time traffic was entirely suspended on the rive*-. As it cleared a little a start was made, and by the time Dover was reached the fog had entirely disappeared. Arrived at Plymouth at 3.24 pm on the 27th February, and left attain an hour later. Had fine weather to Teneriffe, which was reached at 10.13 am on the 4th March ; sailed the same day at 543 pm ; picked up the NE Trades in lat. 19deg. N, and these lasted to lat. lOdeg. W ; encountered the SE Trades in lat. sdeg. S; these blew with moderate strength, and gave out in lat. 2odeg. S. Reached Table Bay at 6.18 am on the 20th March, and left again at 1.40 pm same day ; fell in with a westerly wind shortly after leaving, which continued till long. 46deg. E, the remainder of the run across the southern ocean had variable winds and light airs, and arrived at Hobart at 2 am on the Bth April ; sailed, at 4.30 pm the same day, and arrived as above. On the Ist March Joseph Devine, the infant son of a third-class passenger, died of bronchitis. Captain Kidley is still in command. Mr Tommis is now fourth officer, in place of Mr Hayes, transferred to the Teutonic.
