EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Education Board was held on Wednesday, there be n ' present Messrs R. Blair (chairmau), J. Yeung, F. H. Fraser, H. Bunny, A. W. Brown, Rev J. Paterson and Dr Kewmxn, M.H.R. Finance. —The credit balance at the bank was stated to be L3Oll 7s 4d. The pay-sheet, amounting to L 305 4s Id, wa3 passed fur payment.

Annual Report.—Consideration of the annual report was postponed until next meeting, and it was decided that copies of the report should be circulated amongst members in the meantime. Promotions. Bright should be promoted to the position of assistant teacher at Te Aro School in place of Mias Dowdeswell, who had been transferred to the Tauern School, and that Miss Leighton, at present at Dreyerton, should take Miss Bright’s place. It was decided that Bliss Booth, of Mount Cook Boys’ School, should be transferred to the Clyde quay, and that Bliss Flannigan, Bliss Hall, and Blr Drummond should be appointed assistant, teachers at the same school. BJakara School. —The Chairman of the Makara School Committee waited upon the Board with reference to procuring a new school for the district. The Board decided to grant a sum of L3O for a new school site, aud also that the sum of L2 23 should be granted for fencing. Charges Against Teachers. —A U tter was received from the secretary of the Wellington Educational Institute forwarding » resolution which had been passed by that body to the effect that teachers should be furnished with a copy of all charges preferred against them, and an opportunity of t-plying to them should be afforded before any ho ion was taken. The Chairman said thatm all cases which had yet aviseu the teachers had been furnished with copies of tho charges preferred against ihi-in. After soma discussion the Board decided to acknowledge receipt of the letter.

Resignation. —The resignation i f Bliss Constance Starle, of Newtown School, was received and accepted.

Masteutgn Water Supply.—A letter was received from the Masterton Committee forwarding a resolution which had been passed at a meeting of householders, which was to the effect that the thanks of the community were due to the Committee for their action in securing a permanent water supply for the school. Mr Bunny said the meeting was not a representative one, and there were not more than a dozen persons present. Mr Young said that, so far as he coaid gather, public opinion in Blasterton was entirely agaiust the Committee. The members of the Board did not think it was necessary that they should take any furter action with regard to the matter, and it was decided to acknowledge receipt of the letter. Masterton Infant School. —A request having been received from the Masterton Committee that it was necessary that a new infant school should bo erected, the Board decided to call for a suitable site, and to ask the assistance of the Committee in procuring a site.

Aided School. —lt was decided that the erection of an aided school at Te Horo should be proceeded with as soon as a suitable piece of land was available. Unprotected Windows. A letter having been received from the Terrace School Committee requesting the Board to take steps to prevent the windows at the school being broken, it was decided to instruct the architect, to give an estimate of the cost of protecting the windows, either by screens or wire netting. Repairs, Fencing, &c. —With regard to a request by Mr J. Holland that the Boatd should contribute to the cost of fencing between his section and tho Pitono school, the Board decided to vote its share of the cost of erecting a fence, as provided by the Act. A grant of L 5 for gravelling the Whiteman’s Valley School ground was made to the Local Committee. It was decided to call for tenders for repairing the school residence at the Hutt School, and carrying out certain fencing work at the same school and repairing the Eketahuna School residence. An application by the Clareville Committee for additions to the school was referred to the inspector and the architect.

Gymnastic Instruction. —M. de Mey wrote stating that he could not procure tho use of the schoolroom in Ghuznee street for gymnastic instruction for less thanL4o per annum, and he asked that the Board should contribute L2O. The Board agreed to do this. Leave of Absence. —Bliss G. Leatham was granted a month’s leave of absence on account of ill-health.

Scholarship Examination.—A letter was read from Mr T. R. Fleming, who conducted the recent scholarship examina-

tious, suggesting that, several alterations should be'made with regard to the next examination. lie thought that in English a short, work of a standard author might be added to. the work set. He pointed out th-yt besides improving the English of tho scholars and imbuing them with a ta3to for English literature, it would tend to prevent the candidature of those scholars who' nr,- totally unfit for the work, and w'tosq presence at tho examination was only 'a waste of time jo a'l cunwri ed. He also suggested that a citcui.ir should bo sent to each school slating definitely the subjects of the examination, as last year there seemed to be coma doubt as to what was actually required in history and scienc-'. Another siiggpatiori was that the examination ho hold in October instead of November. It 'wou ! d not then interfere with the inspection of the city schools, from which must of the candidates came, and it would enable the results to be declared yarlu-r. In conclusion ha submitted .the following programme English, two pipers (a) grammar, dictation, and composition ; (b) some work of a standard English author, to be .selected each year. Arithmetic— As for sixllr'staYi'dnrd, general. Geo-graphy—-As for -Sixtn standard, general. History, English (special attention to be paid t.» tho Tudor, Stuart, and Brunswick periods, with a general knowledge of the earlier history to 1485). Science —Any one of the following :—Chemistry, physics, physiology, and botany. It wat decided to refer the communication to a committee, eunsimng of the Chairman, : R:v J. Paterson, and Dr Newman, who will present a report in due course. Committee —The remainder of the businet-s was fcru.tsac'e.l in committee. The Board det i led to adhere to its former decision to' appoint Mr. F. Bennett, assistant at Newtown, to the position of headmaster at Eketahuna. Blrs Nelson, of the Mauricevtlle School, was promoted to the position of assistant at Blaiigatainbko. ■ It was decided to transfer Mr G. B iry. at present iu charge of the Pahiatua School, to the Newtown School, to take the pl»c-i of Blr Bennett. The tender of J. O’Neill, of Ll 5, for fencing at the Featherston School, aud that of Thompson and Co. for the erection of the new school at Clyde quay, were accepted. The Board decided that they had no power to alter the name of the Blatigatainoko School District to that of Pukemiki, as requested by the local committee. Consideration of a letter from Blr Larcltin, relative to the punish merit of his child, who attends the Karori School, waa deferred, pending the receipt of a report from the Inspector upon the matter.
