THE UNIVERSITY BOAT RACE.

London-, March 19. For the University boat race tho betting is 7 to 4 on Oxford.

Betting on the University boat race, which takes place on Wednesday, is 5 to 4 ou Oxford.

A race took place this evening between the crews of the Poverty Bay Rowing Club, who acquitted themselves so well at Napier and A uokland respectively last month. The race was the best that has ever taken place in Gisborne. The boats were abreast the whole of the two mile course, the crew which visited Napier, stroked by Nesbitt, winning by a foot. Lyttelton, March 23.

The Lyttelton Rowing Club are making efforts to send a crew to Wellington to compete in the regatta on April sth.

WELLINGTON ROWING CLUB.

A start was made with the Club Fours (Wellington Rowing Club) last evening week, when S. Dix (bow), S. Rosa (2), J. Woodger (3), E. J. Barber (stroke), T. Dix (cox) defeated H. Goddard (bow), D. Young (2), G. Maule (3), C. Jenkins (stroke), H. Dix (cox) by less than half a length. The race, which was from the Thorndon Baths to the shed, was a splendid struggle right through, and was just won on the post. Messrs W. Bridson (deputy-captain) and T. .Sullivan acted as starter and judge respectively.

The final heat of the Macdonald Sculls (Wellington Rowing Club) was rowed on Tuesday between T. Goer and S. Waters, the former winning by two and a half lengths. The course was from Thomas’ point to tbe shed, the race being started by Mr W. Bridson, deputy-captain, and judged by Mr J. Brown. The result was rather a surprise, it being looked on a 3 a pretty sure thiDg for Waters, but he was undoubtedly not at his best, as be was suffering from a heavy cold. ORIENTAL BOATING CLUB. Two heats of the Junior Sculls were rowed last night week, when G. Hill beat E. Hart by two lengths, and G. Read defeated A. Cutler by two lengths. The course was from Point Jerningham to the Club’s shed. Messrs A. Bill and L. B. Jordan acted as starter and judge respectively. STAR BOATING CLUB. The first heats of the McLean Fours were rowed last nightweek, resultingas follows : A. R. Kennedy’s crew defeated Pownall’s by several lengths. Duncan’s defeated Stock’s after a close and exciting race. Stock led to the Railway' Wharf, when Duncan spurted and got on level terms, eventually just winning by half a length. The third heat resulted in a win for Newton’s crew, who defeated Smith’s by one lerigth, after a good race. The deputycaptain (E. Jackson) acted as starter, and L. C. Roskruge as judge. Another heat of the McLean Fours was

rowed on Tuesday'night. Cruiclcsbank (bow) Connal (2), Burnes (3), and C. J. Cooper (stroke) defeating Willeston (bow), Johnston (2), MOller (3), and Kennedy (s roke) by three-quarters of a length after a close and exciting race. No. 3in Kennedy’s crew rowed with the crew for the first time, being aubstitute for Morrah, who was unwell.
