MASTERTON.

(from our own correspondent.) January 3. The holidays are over, ar.d, taken as a whole, they have passed off very satisfactorily. There has been a fair amount of business, and the town has been full of visitors, among which all classes are represented. Even now a large proportion of the working men who came from the conntry are still in town. Probably they will stay' till Monday morning. There has been very little drunkenness, nor was there much larrikinism on New Fear’s Eve. A heavy shower of rain which came just in the nick of time probably damped the ardour of those who were anxious to see how much property they could destroy. Farmers are busy looking for harvesting hands, and are not getting them so readily as last year. A four-roomed cottage at Kurupuni, occupied by Mr D. McCalmont, was burned down, with nearly all its contents, about 4 p. in. on New Fear’s Day. The occupants were on the sports ground at the time, and the house was locked up. The flames broke out near the chimney. The building was insured in the Nortn British office for L 125, and the furniture in the Phoenix for LIOO. Hugo’s Exhibition Combination occup:ed the Theatre Royal last night and the night before. The building was crowded, and the performances were pronounced first-class. The Jubilee Celebration Committee is considering the advisableness of lighting a huge bonfire on either Otahua orßangitumau on Jubilee night. Both the mountains named are prominent, but a good flare up on the latter would not only be seen throughout the Valley, but from nearly all parts of the Forty-Mile Bush.
