The U.S.S, Co’s ss Rotomahana, from Melbourne, via Southern ports, arrived hero at 10.2 Q on Friday morning. She left Melbourne on the 23rd October, Hobart 25th, Eluff 29th, Dunedin 31st, and Lyttelton at 9 pm next day. She sailed on Friday evening for Auckland, via East Coast. The barque Peru arrived from Rockhampton after a run of 14 days. She is under charter to the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, and she will load here for England. The S.S. and A. Co’s chartered barque Banklands, from Melbourne, arrived here on Saturday afternoon, and went on the loading berth forthwith to take in cargo for London. The Qhina Navigation Co's ss Taiyuan left Hong Kong on October 9th, and passed New Ireland next day. Moderate southerly wind with heavy rain squalls were experienced from the 21st to the 26th, thence she had. high seas with variable and light airs until the 28th, after whioh she experienced moderate northerly winds and thick weather until arrival at Auckland on the 30th ult. After discharging part of her cargo she left for Wellington the next day, arriving here at 6.30 last Friday night. The Taiyuan, brought four passengers—Mr C. Webb, from Hong Kong to Dunedin, - aud three Chinese from Auckland, who are returning^

to China. Her cargo for this port is as follows 110 crates curios, 21 pkgs tea, 7320 bags rice, 831 half-cheats tea, 2355 boxes tea, 21,979 bags sugar, 131 pkgs merThe Government steamer Stella returned from her trip to the Southern lighthouses at 3.40 am on Saturday. While away the Stella visited the Snares, Auckland, Cam; bell, Antipodes and Bounty Islands, leaving Lyttelton at midday on the 2nd, and arriving as above.

The U.S.S. Co’s ss Arawata arrived here at 3.30 am on Saturday, from Fiji, via Auckland. She sailed for Lyttelton on Saturday evening. The U.S.S. Co’s ssTakapuna, from Nelson and Picton, arrived here after a fine weather passage at 7-30 am on Saturday. She sailed the same day for New Plymouth and Onehunga, with the outward mail via San Francisco. . , , The U.S.S. Co.’s ss Grafton arrived here from Westport at 11.40 am on Sunday, having left there on the 3rd inst. at 10 am. She experienced strong south-westerly breeze 'and heavy sea from Westport until abreast of the Spit, from thence to arrival moderate The "u.S.S. Co.’s ss Wairarapa arrived here from Sydney, via Auckland and Fast Coast, on Sunday at 10 am. She left Sydney at 2.30 pm on 26th ultimo, had strong head wind and sea to 29th, thence fine weather to arrival in Auokland on 31st ; left again at 12.30 pm on Ist, called at Gisborne and Napier, and arrived here as above, having had light variable winds down the coast. She sailed for Melbourne via Southern ports on Monday. . The barque Clairmont was taken in tow tor Picton by the ss Rotorua last Saturday night. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Wanaka left Onehunga at 5.30 pm on the 2nd instant; crossed Manukau bar at 6 am next day, having been detained inside all night owing to bad ■weather; reached New Plymouth at 9 pm on the 3rd, and left again at 10.30 pm, arriving here at 5.30 pm on Sunday. She experienced strong S.W. winds and heavy sea from the Manukau until early on Sunday morning, thence'to arrival strong southerly wind and head sea. The Wanaka sailed on Sunday night for Lyttelton. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Mawhera left Dunedin at 10 pm on the 31st ultimo ; called at Oamaru and Timaru, and arrived at Ly ttelton at 6 am on the 3rd instaut ; left again at 4.30 am on Sunday, and arrived here at 10.30 pm. She experienced fresh S. . seas and winds throughout. The Mawhera sailed on Monday for Greymouth. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Hauroto, from Sydney, arrived here at 5 pm Monday. She left Sydney at 2,15 pm on the 31st October, had the Spit light a beam at 6 am on Monday, Stephen Island abeam at 10.35, The Brothers at 1.45 pm, arriving here as above. Experienced variable winds and fine weather. The ss Waihi arrived here early on Tuesday morning from Spring Creek, she having left there at 5.45 pm on the sbh inst. She returned same evening. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Wanaka, from Lyttelton, arrived here at 1.30 pm on Tuesday, having experienced fine weather throughout. She sailed same evening for New Plymouth and Onehunga. . , _ The U.S.S. Co’s ss Mahmapua left Dunedin on the 2nd inst, called at Timaru, Akaroa, and Lyttelton, leaving the latter port at 1 pm on the sth, and arriving here at 7.30 am on Tuesday. The Mahinapua sailed same afternoon for Nelson and Westport. , ~ The ship Pleione, for London, should get away to-morrow. The steamers Kawatiri from Greymouth, and Wareatea from Westport arrived here on Wednesday, the former at 7 am, and the latter at 2.30 pm. The Kawatiri returned same night. The U.S.S. Co’s saPenguin, from Southern ports, arrivedhereatl.so pm on vVednesday. She left Dunedin on the sth inst, and Lyttelton at 9 pm on the 6th, experienced fine weather throughout, and arrived as above. Co’a as Arawa left Dunedin at 4.30 pm on the 6th inst, experienced fresh northerly winds throughout, and arrived here at 5.15 on Wednesday. It will bo in the recollection of our readers that we published in June the contents of a marine card cast into tho Indian Ocean in lat. 41deg 17min, long, llldeg sGminsosec, at 12 o’clock noon, on the 15th February, 18S6, from His Imperial Majesty’s ship Bismarck upon her voyage to Sydney upon that date. The bottle containing the card was discovered in an unfrequented part of the Seventy Mile Beach by a Maori of To Kao, and fortunately brought to Mr A. G. Allan, •who forwarded it, a 3 directed, to the Im» perial German Beard of Admiralty, with a letter and map showing the ox ot position found, viz., lat. 31deg 33min S., long.
