The Court of Appeal, by a majority of four to one, has endorsed the judgment of Mr Justice North, upholding the action of the Directors of the Bank of Australasia, in granting a pension of LISOO a year for five years to the family of Mr S. S. Parkes, the Melbourne superintendent of the bank, who was killed in the Windsor Kailway accident.in Victoria. Five thousand colliers in South Staffordshire are still out on strike. It is believed that-the Parnell Commission will last two months at least. Count N. de. Robilant, the Italian Ambassador in London, died suddenly to day. r - The rumour to the effect that Sir John Gorst, Political Secretary to the India Office, would succeed Air Wm. F. Drummond Jervois as Governor of New Zealand, is denied. It. is reported' that Mr D. R. Plunkett, Commissioner of Works in the present Administration, will succeed Sir W. 0. F. Robinson as Governor of South Australia, little credence being given t-o the rumour formerly telegraphed to the effect ; that Mr Plunkett would be the probable successor of Sir Anthony Muegrave as Governor of Queensland. It -is thought the climate of South Australia will be more suitable to Mr Plunkett’s health than the climate 4 * of Queensland. The succession to the Governorship of Queensland is now regarded as a certaiinty for Mr Henry Cecil Bailees, one of the members for Cambridge University and PostmasterGeneral in the present Administration. A largely attended meeting of colliery owners was held to-day, when a resolution was passed regretting that they were unable to grant an advance of wages to the minerß ; and they also agreed that the Mayor of Sheffield, along with representatives chosen by the miners, could inspect their books in order to prove that they were not in a position to pay a higher rale of wage.
