WANGANUI.

[By Telegraph.]

(from oce own correspondent.) Wanganui, October 18. At the Supreme Court to-day a peculiar case id bankruptcy was hoard. In 1887 A. J. McGregor, storekeeper, filed, aud among his creditors was his wife, who had lent him the sarn of £9OO, left her by. the. will of a relative at Home. .On the advice of the solicitors, the Assignee_ rejected the claim, ana he, understanding it to be .withdrawn, afterward paid the first dividend. Then Mrs McGregor sent in a proof of the debt for her c airn, and brought an action against the Deputy Official Assignee to force him to admit it. Judge Prendergast allowed her to coroe in with the other creditors, and the present action was brought to decide whether she is to share as the other creditors aid or whether she only has a right to come in for a share in the second dividend. The Judge has reserved his.decision,/ If it favours the claimant the Assignee will have to get a refund from those who have received a dividend, and in all probability will be considerably out of pocket himself. „ Mahakipawa diggers, who returned to-aay, are dissatisfied with the results. _ ' The local representatives. for the Melbourne shooting leave here on Saturday, lhe alteration in the boat has quite upset all their arrangement. At a School Committee meeting a proposal was made that boys should be taught swimming under the instructions of one of the masters.

I hear there is a probability of Henry Nathan, the senior borough councillor, again contesting the mayoralty. Probably both local boating clubs will be represented at the Rowing Association Meeting. S. F. Fitzherbert and Powell for the 'Wanganui Rowing Club, and Bates and Rodwell, for the Union Club, are mentioned as likely delegates. The preparations for the Agricultural and Pastoral Show leads to the belief that this season’s show will be a great success. It will be the first held here for some five Owing to the absence of Captain Flyger at Melbourne. Lieutenant Foster, of the Wanganui Rifles, will probably take charge of tho Wanganui City Rifles. Wanganui, October 19. Miss Hume concluded a successful season here to-night, and proceeds to-morrow -o Napier, thence ts Auckland ; returning, via Taranaki, to Wellington. ... , The brigantine Wild Wave, with hardwood, arrived here to-day, drawing 12ft.She left Newcastle on September 14tb, and has been lying in Guards. Bay some time. At the Supreme Court to-day the case of the Government v. Maaawatu Road Board came on. The claim is £BOO for damages caused by the overflow of drains. Mr Jellicoe for ths plaintiff, Messrs Fitzherbert (Wanganui) and Hankins far the defendants. After taking evidence for about half an hour, Chief Justice Prendergast decided that the

jury should view the ground in question, and accordingly they proceeded to Palmerston, to-day, returning here to-morrow night. The case will be resumed on Monday, and it isexpected to take two days or more. Captain Sommerville and other local shootiats leave here by the midday tram to-morrow. He has had excellent reports of the shooting all over the Colony, but for fair averages Davey and Arthur Ballinger, of Wellington, take the cake. I hear that there is a feeling among some shooting men that the New Zealand Rifle Association Meeting ohould not be held this year owing to the stoppage of the Government grant, and circulars will shortly be sent round asking the opinion of the members on the matter. Captain Sommerville is not in favour of this course at all, and I believe that even if the, prizes should be smaller, shooting men will prefer to hold the meeting rather than have it lapse. Wanganui, October 23.

Some days ago Harry Dunne, champion wrestler of New Zealand, published in the Herald an acceptance of George Robertson s challenge, inserted some time back by J. S. Riley, of Wellington ; but, so far, nothing has been heard from Robertson or Ixiley. If the match comes off it will be in five styles, for £25 or £SO a-side. The great Manawatu Road Board oase still occupies the Sjiprome Court, and • likely to last till Thursday. At the Momohaki Hack Meeting on Saturday, Peter, a horse belonging to Chit ham, a barber here, won tho Momohaki Cup, and paid a dividend of £l7 2s ; Hearn and Kennedy’s The Dove was a good second;:
