THE PUBLIC WORKS ESTIMATES.
The Public Works Estimates were brought down on Saturday. The amount required to be voted for actual expenditure this year is £562,507, as against £1,128,077 voted and £96G, 159 expetided last year. Among the chief reductions in salaries are the following : —Under-Secretary, from £BOO to £7OO ; assistant Under-ScCretary, £4OO to £375 j Accountant, £425 to £4OO ; Engineer-in-Chief, £IOOO to £BOO ; assistant Engineer-in-Chief, £9OO to £750. The railway votes include £SOO for Wellington-Foxton ; £65,000 for Marton-Auckland ; £50,000 Woodville* Palmerston ; £24,000 Masterton-Woodville. For roads in the Wellington Provincial District the following are set down:— Napier-Murimotu, £1000; Pahiatua, Mangaone, and adjacent blocks, £200; Rangitumau, Wangaehu, Kopuaranga, £800; Mikimiki, £350 ; Makakahi-road, £2OO Tiraumea Bridge, £1700; Tutaekara-road, £IOO ; South Pahiatua, £200; MangaoneTiraumea, £llO ; South Mangaone-road. £IOOO ; Puketoi, £460 ; Makaki Bridge to Mangahao, £250 ; Mauriceville Weßt, £250 ; Pohangina-Oroua, £l4O ; Wanganui to Murimotu, £740 ; Marton to Murimotu, £IOO ;Otamakapua, £4OO ; Tokomaru Block, £100; Wai. tapu Block, £437; Maungakaretu, £463; Wai. marino inland country, £250 ; Wairoa Survey District, £250; Waitotara-Momahaki, £3OO j
Otaki to Foxton, £300; Miscellaneous, £2OO, Village Settlement roads (general), £-0,01)0. Hoads —To give access to Marton-Auckland line, £19,000 ; roads in goldfields, £35,000. For telegraph extension £20,000 is set down. Under “publio buildings” the following votes appear New Parliamentary Library in brick, £76 ; departmental buildings (Auckland), £12,000 ; printing office, (Wellington), £7500 ; departmental and other buildings (Wellington) and addi. tional water supply, £1000; Wellington new prison (Mount Cook), £3ooo > Wellington and Porirua Lunatic Asylums, £o00; Sunnyside (Christchurch), £4IOO ; Seacliff (Dunedin), £3500 ; Hospitals, etc., £2044. For harbour defences £56,541 is set down ; for lighthouses, etc., £3750; for rates on Native lands (for pact year), £11.500 ; for charges and expenses of loan, £30,000 , for Native land purchases, £5571 ; permanent way aud rolling stock, £50,000.
