THE VOLUNTEERS.
The City Rifles opened their “shooting season ” on Saturday last, and was most fortunate in having a fine day for the occasion. The programmo was a nrst-i-ate one, including Hobson and Son’s silver cup, B and C Class trophies, and six ammunition prizes. Thirty-eight members competed, and the shooting on the whole was fairly good. Corporal Jackson’s 39 at 300yds and Captain Collin’s 38 at 500yds are much above the average, while Jackson’s 74, McGregor s 71, and F. Moore’s 70 are very creditable results. The chief prize, “ Hobson’s Cup,” which was won by Corporal Jackson with his well made score of 74, now becomes his own property, he having won it three times. The cap is a very handsome trophy, and was presented to the Corp 3by Hobson and 3 Sons, the wellknown military outfitters, London, in 18S5, and has been competed for 17 times, the names of the winners being engraved on the epp in the following order : —l, Private Cato ; 0. Private Cauty; 3, Private A, Guise; 4, Sergeant Burton; 5, Private Cato; 6, Corporal Jackson; 7, Sergeant Madeley ; 8, Sergeant Madeley ; 9, Corpora' Hansen ; 10, Private Luke ; 11, Private F. Moore ; 12, Private McGregor ; 13, Private A. Guise ; 14, Corporal Jackson; 15, Private McGregor; 16, Private Wilson ; 17, finally, by Corporal Jackson. Sergeant Roberts was the winner of B class trophy with a score of (56. * Ammunition prizes. A large amount of interest was taken m the result of the. match Officers, &c., v. Privates, which, as anticipated, resulted in a very close contest, the officers, &c., winning by eight points. The scores were as follow Jackson, 74 ; Roberts, 66; Hansen, 66 ; Madeley, 65 ; Captain Collins, 63; A. Guise, 62; J. Rankin, 61 ; Davis, 60; and Martin, 43 ; total, 560. Privates—McGregor, 71; F. Moore, 70 ; Luke, 66 ; Hooper, 59; Baggett, 59; Cato, 59; Fearn, 58; Harris, 56 ; and Wilson, 54 ; total, 552. The Rifle Battalion paraded on Monday for Government Inspection at the Volunteer Drillshed, Colonel Crowe in command. Present on parade—City Rifles, 54, under Cap-
tain Collins; Guards, 39, under Captain Mackintosh; "Wellington Rifles, 37, under Captain Lewis ; Newtown Rifles, 35, under Captain Cole; To Aro Rifles, 32, and Thorndon Rifles, 30. Majors Joyce and Loveday, and Adjutant Quick, were also present. The Battalion was drilled by SergeantMajor Bell. Colonel Butts was present as inspecting officer. The capital muster of the City Rifles was the subject of much comment, every man being present on parade. The corps must be congratulated on the _way it rolls up, but last evening’s muster is an achievement seldom obtained by any corps.
