VOLUNTEERS.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND MAIL. Sir, —I am right glad to see that an attempt is being made to send over a team of New Zealand Volunteers to take part in the rifle competitions to be held during the Centennial Exhibition. It is quite time that our Volunteers should have an opportunityof showing what theyreallycan do in rifle shooting. With the old Snider our crack shots have made some excellent scores, and with such an improved weapon as the Martini, given a little practice, they would, I am sure, hold their own against any of the colonies. Ihe Government, I see, arc giving the use of Martinis, but, as usual, cannot assist in wiving anything toward the passages of the team. Surely when the Volunteers themselves are willing to give their time the Colony should at least assist in paying their passages. There are a great many Volunteer officers in the House *, some of them might take up the matter and see what could be done. We have made much of the New Zealand Court at the Exhibition. Our Governor has gone over to assist in the opening ceremony. Why not our Volunteers also be represented? They will, I am sure, compare as favourably with the Volunteers of Victoria and New South Wales as our other New Zealand productions, and do us as much honour. —I am, &c., Martini.
