HIBERNIAN SOCIETY’S ANNUAL SPORTS.
The fSte and athletic sports held annually by the Hibernian Society on St Patrick’s Day took place last Saturday at the Basin Reserve, and attracted a fair attendance. The entries for the various events were numerous, and some of them resulted in pretty close finishes. Appended is the pro. gramme as carried out: — Boyß’ Race, 220yds. under 14 years of age. Mahoney, 1; Burke, 2. Maiden Race, 220yds,;—.Dwyer (St Patrick’s College);- ellingfcon College), 2. St Patrick’s Handicap, first heat, 120yds, Mahoney (syds), 1; Oakley (9yds), 2; King (2yds), 3,
Putting the Stems. —Brosnan (34ft 6in), 1 j Murphy, 2. St. Patrick's Handicap, second heat, 220 yds.—Casey (13yds), 1 ; Oakley (15yds) 2; McMahon (12ydo), 3. There were about a. dozen competitors for this race, which was avery close one. Bicycle Handicap, two miles.—Porter" (450yd8), 40in “ Facile, 1 ; Morpeth (450' yds), 52in “ British Mail,” 2 ; Renner (250 yds), 3Qin “Apollo” Safety Roadster geared to 57in, 3. This race was not so interesting as might have been expected, owing to the fact that Newton and Fenlon, the “ scratch ” men, and Cooper, also a good, rider, were absent. H.A.C.B. Society’s Band Race (in uniform), 220yds.—White, 1 ; Smith, 2. Tug of War, 10 men a side. —Two teams entered for this event, captained by Williams and Murphy respectively, and the former team carried off the prize. St Patrick’s Handicap ‘ final heat), 440yds. —Mahoney (15yds), 1 ; Oakley (25yds), 2 ; King (Byds), 3. Owing to the fact of Mahoney and Oakley having tied for' the Sfc Patrick’s Handicap, the former getting two> first places and the latter three second places, the prize money, amounting to £ls, was divided between them. Irish Jig.—Cronin, 1 ; Monkton, 2. Half-mile Handicap.—Mahoney (10yds), Pullen (10yds), 2 ; Palmer (25yds), 3. Friendly Societies’ Race, 220yds.—Ellis,, 1; MoEwen, 2. One mile Handicap.—Palmer (35yds), 1 j Mahoney (20yds), 2 ; Greeks (sor), 3. Consolation Race, 220yds. Woon, 1 ? McLeary, 2 ; King, 3. A variety of amnsements for children, including a shooting gallery, merry-go-round, &c., were on the ground. The Society’s: band was present and played selections throughout the day. A concert, which was held in the Theatre Royal in the evening, was rather poorly attended, but passed off satisfactorily.
